About judo and Tromsø Judoklubb

JUDO is a Japanese martial art developed by prof. Jigoro Kano. The martial art was founded in Tokyo in 1882, and it's developed from jiujitsu. Judo for the most consists of throws and grapplings, but also strangles and arm-locks.

In judo you use a thick cotton suit consisting of a jacket and pants. Girls also use a t-shirt. The suit is held together by a belt which is knitted together around the waist in a special way. The color of the belt shows the skills of the one who is carrying it. The darker belt, the better is the judoka. The order of the belt colors are: white (6. kyu/mon), yellow (5. kyu/mon), orange (4. kyu/mon), green (3. kyu/mon), blue (2.kyu/mon), brown (1. kyu/mon), black (1.-5. dan), red and white cross-striped (6.-8. dan), and red (9.-10. dan). You can choose to wear a black belt through all ten dan-grades. Junior-/mon-graded (youth/children under 14 years) has belts with a white vertical stripe on the middle of the belt. Mon-graded are not allowed to use arm-locks or strangles.

TROMSØ JUDOKLUBB was founded on the 24th of january 1980. We are a small club with only 40-50 members, of whom most are children and youths. Our dojo (training hall) is from autumn 2008 in a local secondary school, Kroken ungdomsskole, in the town of Tromsø in Northern Norway.
Tromsø Judoklubb has in the past arranged a number of judo clinics and camps, with internationally known instructors. The worlds highest graded woman, black belt Keiko Fukuda (9.dan), has visited our camp once and members of our club have visited her club in San Francisco several times. Other instructors are Ken Freeman (7.dan) (deceased in 1997) from the Barbados, Hartmut Riedrich (6. dan), Germany, and Jim Colgan (6.dan) and Mel Appelbaum (6.dan), USA, and several others.

Tromsø Judoklubb is founded and run by enthusiastic individuals, and we put emphases on education of our instructors. We focus primarily on the joy of our sport and developing motoric skills along with personal development of our members. We are one of few judoclubs in Norway that put considerable effort into the study of kata (formal execution of judo technics in prearranged order).
